The San Antonio Spurs are considered a surprising team that should take a chance on trading James Harden with the Philadelphia 76ers, and Bleacher Report’s NBA contributor Andy Bailey believes that the Spurs could “provide a little stability to Harden’s career.”
“When it comes to teams that could provide a little stability for Harden’s career, the San Antonio Spurs have been a model for that over the past two decades,” Bailey wrote. Now, nearly 10 years after their last championship, they have another talented big man in Victor Winebanyama,” Bailey wrote. It makes sense to let Harden grow slowly along with a few other young players, but Harden is one of the most prolific players in NBA history. It’s going to be tough to create a softer floor for Winebanyama than all the open looks Harden has created for him.
If the San Antonio Spurs front office figures out a way to acquire Harden from Philadelphia, the Spurs could start Harden, Devin Vasser, Jeremy Sozen, Victor Wimbanyama and Zach Collins. Harden would like to be traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, but since he doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract, Harden has no control over where he goes.
In 58 games for the Sixers last season, Harden averaged 21.0 points, 6.1 rebounds and 10.7 assists per game. He led the NBA in assists per game. in the second round of the 2023 playoffs, Philadelphia lost to the Boston Celtics in seven games and the Spurs did not make the playoffs.
So far, the Spurs and Sixers have not talked about a Harden trade, sources told NBA Analytics. If Harden is still with the Sixers in December, perhaps the San Antonio Spurs and Philadelphia 76ers will be in talks then, but that’s doubtful because Harden doesn’t look like a Gregg Popovich type of player.
