An NBA contributor doesn’t think Kyrie Irving will play the entire 2023-24 season with the Dallas Mavericks, and Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz thinks Irving will end up joining the Los Angeles Lakers and reuniting with LeBron James.

Clippers Acquire James Harden from 76ers in Mega Trade Proposal
“Some around the league think Irving will eventually go back to LeBron James, who according to B/R reporter Chris Haynes, pushed the Mavericks to trade James last summer,” Swartz wrote. His comments seem to indicate that he explored a potential reunion, but he ultimately opted for a higher salary in Dallas,” Swartz wrote. In today’s NBA, getting paid first and then forcing yourself to another destination is the new normal.

“The Cavaliers will ultimately do what Luka Doncic wants, which is to keep Irving as his partner and follower for the time being. However, if Dallas gets off to another sub-.500 start and is in danger of missing the playoffs again (a real possibility with the powerhouse Western Conference), Irving could be on the trade market again. If (when?) things don’t go well for Irving in Dallas, expect the All-Star point guard to end up with the Lakers.”

The Lakers tried to acquire Irving after the superstar made a trade request to the Brooklyn Nets last season. The Los Angeles Lakers offered the Brooklyn Nets Russell Westbrook and two first-round draft picks in 2027 and 2029, but Irving was eventually traded to the Mavericks.

Irving and LeBron were a great duo for the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2014-15 through 2016-17. LeBron contributed 25.5 points, 7.4 rebounds and 7.8 assists per game alongside Irving, while Uncle Drew contributed 22.1 points and 5.3 assists per game alongside the King.

According to HoopsHype’s NBA insider Michael Scotto, Irving has a 15 percent trade kicker in his new contract with the Mavericks. A trade kicker is the percentage of a player’s salary that is paid out as a bonus in the event of a trade. Irving re-signed a three-year, $126 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks on the first day of free agency this offseason.
